3D filament drawing——Why&How | iSANMATE

This article will tell you why 3D printing filament draws, and how to solve the problem of 3D printing filament drawing?
Why does 3d printing filament draw?

Filament drawing can occur for a number of reasons in 3D printing, including:

  1. High printing temperature: If the printing temperature is set too high, the filament becomes more fluid and prone to excessive flow even when not actively extruding. This increased flow can cause the filament to droop or sag due to gravity during idle movements.
  2. Insufficient cooling: In some cases, inadequate cooling can contribute to filament drooping. If the print cooling fan or cooling system is not functioning optimally, the heat from the previous layers can affect the behavior of the filament, making it more prone to drooping during idle movements.
How to solve 3D printing filament drawing?

To address this issue, you can try the following solutions:

  1. Lower the printing temperature: Reduce the temperature to a level that is still suitable for proper extrusion but minimizes excessive flow when the extruder is idle.
  2. Enable retraction: Retraction is a feature that pulls the filament back slightly when it is not being actively extruded, reducing the chances of oozing and drooping. Adjust the retraction settings in your 3D printing software to find the optimal distance and speed for your printer.
  3. Adjust travel speed and acceleration: Higher travel speeds and accelerations can exacerbate filament drooping. Reduce these settings to allow the printer to move more smoothly and with less disturbance to the filament.
  4. Use a filament cooling fan: A cooling fan can help solidify the filament more quickly, reducing the chances of drooping. Ensure that the fan is properly adjusted and positioned to provide effective cooling without causing other issues like warping or bed adhesion problems.

By implementing these adjustments and finding the right balance of temperature, retraction, travel speed, and cooling, you can minimize filament drooping and achieve cleaner and more precise prints.
