Why are filament diameters inconsistent?

During the filament production process, we sometimes encounter the problem of inconsistent diameters, that is, the filament takes on an elliptical shape instead of the ideal round shape. This phenomenon may affect the quality and stability of the filament.

Let us understand together the causes of varying filament diameters and the measures we take to ensure the stability of diameters.

Why are filament diameters inconsistent?

Reason 1: Insufficient water level in hot water tank

After the filament is extruded from the extruder, it usually needs to pass through two water troughs: a hot water trough and a cold water trough. The role of the hot water water tank is to ensure the roundness of the filament, while the cold water water tank is used for cooling and shaping. When the water level in the hot water tank is insufficient, part of the material after the filament is extruded from the main machine may not be completely submerged in the hot water, causing the filament to expand and deform, forming an elliptical shape and causing different wire diameters.

Reason 2: The water tank temperature is not suitable

Water bath temperature is one of the key factors affecting filament roundness. If the temperature of the water tank is not suitable, that is, too low or too high, it may cause the filament to form an elliptical shape and make the wire diameter inconsistent.

Reason 3: Abnormal flow of filament

When filament production begins or ends, filament feeding is often unstable, resulting in wire diameter fluctuations. This abnormal outflow may also cause the filament to form an oval and make the wire diameter inconsistent.

Production process

Measures to ensure stable wire diameter

In order to ensure the quality of filament and the stability of wire diameter, we have taken the following measures:

Measure 1. Laser caliper

During the production process, we are equipped with a laser caliper to detect the wire diameter of the filament in real time. If the wire diameter is abnormal, the laser diameter gauge will sound an alarm to promptly remind the operator to make adjustments and processing.

Measure 2. Needle stuck equipment

Before filament winding, we set up the needle clamping equipment. The needle jamming device can prevent the filament wire diameter from being too large. Once the filament diameter exceeds 1.8mm, the needle jamming device will get stuck, thereby preventing the wire diameter from being too large.

Measure 3. Weight inspection

In addition to the above measures, we also use weight detection methods to ensure the stability of wire diameter. We usually produce filament by the meter. The weight of each roll of filament is 1kg, and the corresponding length is 340m. If the weight of a roll of filament is much less than 1kg, you need to consider the possibility of weight loss due to too small wire diameter.
