Matte PETG vs Regular PETG: Performance, Appearance & Print Quality

Matte PETG and regular PETG are both PETG-based filaments, but they are not identical in how they look or perform.

The most obvious difference is the surface finish. Matte PETG has a low-gloss, light-diffusing surface, while regular PETG has a more reflective, glossy appearance. This difference can make layer lines less noticeable on Matte PETG prints.

But appearance is only part of the comparison. To see how the two materials compare mechanically, we printed and tested specimens using the same conditions. The results show that neither material is simply “stronger” overall. Instead, each has different strengths depending on the type of load.

Test results are based on our internal testing under the same test conditions. Values may vary with filament formulation, print settings, specimen geometry, print orientation, and test method.

The results are quite clear: Regular PETG has higher tensile and flexural strength in our tests, while Matte PETG shows higher elongation at break and unnotched impact strength.

1. Surface Finish: Matte vs Glossy

Matte PETG produces a low-gloss, diffuse surface. It does not eliminate physical layer lines, but it reduces the strong reflections that can make them stand out. Regular PETG reflects more light from the printed surface, making layer transitions and small surface imperfections more noticeable, especially under direct lighting.

In practice:
Matte PETG: low-gloss, softer-looking surface with less visible layer texture
Regular PETG: glossy, reflective surface with more pronounced layer lines

This makes Matte PETG a good option for display models, product prototypes, enclosures, and other prints where surface appearance matters.

2. Tensile Strength: Very Similar Results

Our X-Y tensile test results were:
Matte PETG: 38.26 MPa
Regular PETG: 39.61 MPa

The difference is small, with Regular PETG showing a slightly higher result. This means Matte PETG does not give up much tensile strength for its matte finish. If tensile strength is the main requirement, the two materials are relatively close based on our testing.

3. Elongation at Break: Matte PETG Shows More Deformation

The difference is much larger in elongation at break:
Matte PETG: 12.36%
Regular PETG: 4.35%

Matte PETG stretched significantly farther before breaking in our X-Y test. A higher elongation at break means the material can undergo more tensile deformation before fracture. For parts that may experience repeated stretching or deformation, this can be an important property to consider.

4. Flexural Strength: Regular PETG Performs Better

For flexural strength:
Matte PETG: 60.41 MPa
Regular PETG: 76.50 MPa

Standard PETG shows higher flexural strength. If maximum flexural strength is the main priority, Standard PETG may be the better choice based on our current data. If you need a balance between mechanical performance and a lower-reflection appearance, Matte PETG will be a better choice.

5. Impact Strength: Matte PETG Shows Higher Resistance in Our Test

Our unnotched impact test showed:
Matte PETG: 43.694 kJ/m²
Regular PETG: 30.16 kJ/m²

Impact strength measures how much energy a specimen can absorb under a sudden impact before breaking. This makes it relevant to parts that may experience occasional knocks, drops, or sudden mechanical loads.

Combined with the higher elongation at break, the result suggests that Matte PETG can tolerate more deformation and absorb more impact energy under our tested conditions.

Which PETG Should You Choose?

The right choice depends on what matters most for your print.

Choose Matte PETG if you prioritize:

  • A low-gloss, modern appearance
  • Less visually noticeable layer lines
  • Higher elongation at break in our testing
  • Higher unnotched impact strength in our testing
  • Functional prints where appearance matters

Matte PETG is particularly suitable for display models, product prototypes, enclosures, consumer-facing parts, and functional prints where a refined surface is important.

Choose Regular PETG if you prioritize:

  • A traditional glossy PETG appearance
  • Higher tensile strength in our testing, although the difference was small
  • Higher flexural strength
  • Applications where rigidity under bending is a major consideration

Regular PETG remains a strong all-purpose choice for functional components, brackets, holders, mechanical parts, and other applications where surface appearance is secondary.

Printing Considerations

Material performance is only part of the equation. Print temperature, speed, cooling, and filament moisture can all affect the final print.

Our testing shows that Matte PETG and regular PETG are not simply the same material with different surface finishes. Matte PETG stands out for its low-gloss appearance, less visually prominent layer lines, higher elongation at break, and higher unnotched impact strength in our tests. Regular PETG shows higher flexural strength and slightly higher tensile strength in the same testing.

So the better choice depends on the part:
